This Week at Riverside
You Are Welcome Here
Everyone is welcome at Riverside Presbyterian Church. No matter your age, race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, mental or physical ability, marital status, economic status, differences of thought or belief, you are welcome here because you are a child of God.
Join us for
Sunday School
9:30 am on Sundays
Janet serves as the Director of Children’s Ministry at RPC and joined the staff in October 2025. She shares: What I love most about serving at RPC is having the space to have meaningful conversations with children about Jesus and helping connect lessons to their own experiences and stories. Watching their faith grow and seeing their excitement as they learn is incredibly rewarding.
One of my favorite parts of Sunday mornings is greeting familiar faces and meeting new visitors. I especially enjoy welcoming new families and hearing the “regulars” share little pieces of their week. Those connections help make RPC feel like home.
Something that always makes me laugh is a good pun or a classic kid joke. One of my recent favorites is: “What do you call a magician who has lost his magic? Ian.” Children have a wonderful way of finding humor in the simplest things, and I love sharing those moments with them.
When I’m not at RPC, you can often find me fishing, hiking, or simply relaxing on my back porch with a glass of lemonade and my faithful dog, Blue. One of the things I love most about Jacksonville is having both the river and the beach nearby—two of my favorite places to spend time.
One of my favorite memories at RPC was during Vacation Bible School when I watched Jared invite children to sit at the organ bench. Seeing their eyes light up as they experienced the instrument and eagerly shared what they had learned was a joyful reminder of how meaningful those moments can be for children.
“Janet has brought so much positivity and joy to our staff throughout her first year with us,” says Pastor Brian. “She wears her love for Christ on her sleeve and always reminds our kiddos that they are beloved children of God— what could be more foundational to our kids’ faith development than that? We are grateful to have Janet among us.”

Life moves fast. Slow down at The Table.
Once a month, the young adults at Riverside Presbyterian Church slow down, gather around a restaurant table (a different place each month), and enjoy an evening of conversation and community. Come meet other young adults who are also navigating work, relationships, faith, and everything in between.
Appetizers are on the church.
Drinks are on you.
Everyone is welcome.
The Table is focused on adults ages 21-31. (If you’re a little older than this defining decade but feel that this group could be meaningful for you, you’re very welcome!)
Meet at The Table...
at Strings (1850 Main St, 32206) on Monday, June 29
at Wicked Barley (4100 Baymeadows Rd, 32217) on Thursday, July 23
at Fore Score (1407 Atlantic Blvd, 32207) on Wednesday, August 26
Whether you're a young adult new to the area, new to church, or simply looking for your people, you are welcome to The Table.

Throughout the summer, we will be spotlighting members of RPC's staff, many of whom you don't see on a Sunday morning but who work throughout the week to help support the ministry of Riverside.
Olivia Farley serves as RPC’s Administrative and Communications Assistant and has been part of the staff for less than a year. She shares: What I love most about serving at RPC is that I have a job that serves the Lord while being surrounded by a positive and supportive community. One of my favorite parts of my job is hearing the beautiful music lineup when I download the audio recordings of the services each week.
Three words that describe me are adventurous, motivated, and creative. Something that always makes me laugh is remembering the time I accidentally set off the fire alarm during my first week on the job. (If you’re ever looking for me, you won’t find me anywhere near the toaster oven.) One of my favorite memories at RPC is receiving flowers from the flower delivery team as a warm welcome when I joined the staff.
When I’m not at RPC, I love starting a day off with an early Pilates class before heading to a coffee shop and then the beach. One thing I especially love about Jacksonville is its proximity to the beach and its incredible food and coffee scene—there’s always something new to try. A hidden talent of mine is building travertine side tables, and I can also whistle just about any song inward!
Pastor Brian says, “Olivia has been a valuable new addition to our staff. She’s talented, reliable, and efficient–just the person we need to help manage the significant amount of weekly communication tasks that keep our church running. Plus, she’s a great team player and has a subtle sense of humor! We are grateful for all the gifts she brings to our staff!”

Our rising 4th-6th graders spent the week serving and learning about our city. In one week they:
- Served at UCOM, a local food pantry
- Cleaned up trails at Tillie Fowler Park
- Explored and cleaned up trash at Fort Caroline
- Helped at Trinity Lutheran Food Pantry
- and learned about God’s creation together at Tree Hill. This final day was used as a reminder of the importance and beauty in nature that God created for us all and how we can all be good stewards of the Earth.
Most mornings of this week began with a devotional from different adult volunteers. This devotional time helped center, encourage, and energize our Summer in the City participants to serve and learn well all week! What a fantastic week of service, learning, and of course, fun! There was even time to take the church van through the Krispy Kreme drive-thru. Thank you to all of the adult volunteers who made this week possible, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Throughout the summer, we will be spotlighting members of RPC's staff, many of whom you don't see on a Sunday morning but who work throughout the week to help support the ministry of Riverside.
Nancy serves as the Meals on Wheels Coordinator and Administrative Assistant at RPC. She’s been
here for almost four years (in October)! She shares: What I love most about serving at RPC is the people and the connections. Building relationships and being part of this community is what makes my work so meaningful. One of my favorite memories as a staff member is our staff meetings. I love when we share tidbits about ourselves and talk about the good, bad, and everything in between. Something that always makes me laugh is children and seniors. They both have a way of bringing joy and unexpected humor to everyday life. One of my earliest memories of RPC goes back to childhood. I came to a wedding here with
my grandmother and remember the elegance of the sanctuary. We walked to the Women's Club for the reception, and I remember looking back at the church and thinking, “That's a solid building that holds a lot of Jacksonville history. That bride must have been someone special.” (Today, I know all brides are special.) I’m grateful to be part of a place with such deep roots, meaningful connections, and a rich history in Jacksonville.
“Nancy is the life of the office,” says Pastor Brian. “She’s warm and welcoming, loves to decorate for holidays and people’s birthdays, and is quick to make people feel celebrated. She’s devoted to our Meals on Wheels program, and cares deeply for our neighbors. And as a Presbyterian through and through, she understands how the church works, and is a wealth of ideas and insights.”

In worship this past Sunday we gave thanks for Dave Tuttle’s 16 years as the Handbell Director at Riverside. The Handbell Choir played two pieces in worship and Dave was given a very warm round of applause from the congregation. Thank you, Dave! Jared Stellmacher, our Director of Music Ministries will direct the Handbell Choir beginning this fall. This service also: celebrated our Vacation Bible School and Summer in the City participants, welcomed new members, and contained a fantastic organ and piano duet!

Snowball Mountain Challenge ❄️ ⛷️
Our Vacation Bible School friends heard Bible stories of courage all week. Thank you to all of the youth and adult volunteers for making such it such a fantastic week on the slopes!
And remember:
I can share my gifts!
I can be brave!

June 2026 Prayer Picture - Join us in prayer!
Each month, we will offer a simple prayer guide called the “Riverside’s Prayer Picture” with prompts of things we can all pray for together as a church. You’ll find it in your bulletin on the first Sunday of the month, in the office, and here on social media. Take it with you, leave it in your car or on your fridge, bookmark it online; then carve out at least a brief moment regularly for prayer. When it comes to spiritual growth, no practice is more foundational than a prayerful posture toward God.

❓What if our church became an even more vibrant, life-giving presence in our neighborhood?
Week one of the Neighborhood Church class is in the books but we hope you’ll join us for the following four weeks of this class taught by the Rev. Dana Riley and Jim Riley! Full description below.
ℹ️ In this five-week class, we’ll explore key ideas from the book Neighborhood Church: Transforming Your Congregation into a Powerhouse for Mission, and reflect together on Riverside’s role in our own community. How is God already at work around us? And how might we join in?
Authors Eric Van Tatenhove and Rob Mueller invite churches to listen deeply, build meaningful relationships, and discover new ways to engage the gifts already present in their neighborhoods. Join us for conversation, reflection, and imagination for what could be.

Pentecost Sunday!
Pentecost worship was full of joy and celebration, with fantastic jazz music (including RPC’s own Cliff Huber, Jesse Huber, and Mark Zeigler) and the words of breath, fire, advocate, helper, and counselor displayed in the art installation above our heads. Children and families made gliders; a reminder that the Holy Spirit equips us to go out and share Jesus.

Fishes & Loaves has restocked the freezers!
This volunteer-based ministry team cooks homemade meals and freezes them so our deacons and pastoral staff can deliver food to people in need. Whether supporting new parents, caring for those recovering from surgery, or comforting families during times of grief, these meals are a practical way our church shares love and care to our community.

Summer Choir at Riverside 🎶
Summer is a wonderful time to try something new—why not join in the music ministry at Riverside?
Riverside’s choir leads worship each week, and during the program year the choir rehearses Thursday evenings, but for the summer months we simplify things. Beginning June 7, you’re invited to be part of the Summer Choir, meeting only on Sunday mornings at 9:30 am—no weekday rehearsals required.
Made up of volunteers and supported by staff singers, the choir is a group of people who come together to sing, build community, support each other, and have fun. Whether you’ve sung in choirs for years, are returning after some time away, or are simply curious to give it a try, you are warmly welcome.
At Riverside, music is a vital part of our worship life: “Let everything that has breath praise the Lord” (Psalm 150:6). The requirements are simple—enthusiasm, energy, and effort. We work together to develop a unity, both musically and spiritually, that enables us to share God’s love through music.
If you’ve ever thought about singing in the choir, this is the perfect time. Just show up on Sunday mornings, or reach out to Jared Stellmacher for more information.
We’d love to have you join us this summer!
—Jared

🔥 Join us this Pentecost Sunday as we celebrate the day the Holy Spirit moved like wind and fire—filling ordinary people with boldness, joy, and a voice to share God’s love with the world. Often called the “birthday of the Church,” Pentecost reminds us that God’s Spirit is not distant, but alive, moving, and still at work among us today. This year’s service will be especially vibrant as Riverside member and musician Cliff Huber returns with a talented combo of musicians to lead a dynamic Jazz Pentecost service—a tradition that has been shaped over many years at Riverside. From prelude to postlude, their music will guide us through a rich blend of jazz, gospel, and blues—featuring creative arrangements of beloved hymns, original compositions, and even a fresh take on “Let It Be.” Expect energy, joy, and a spirit of participation—this is worship that invites you in.
❤️ You are encouraged to wear something red to this service!

a blessing for mother's day
by Kate Bowler
a blessing for mother’s day
Bless all who mother,
holding us in their arms,
in the quiet corners of their hearts.
The weight of small hands in yours,
the joy that catches you off guard,
the quiet power of being needed–
and the love that makes you braver
than you were.
Bless all the exhausted and overextended,
the ones holding it all together and
the ones hanging on for dear life.
The ones doing the best they can
with what they have,
and all of those learning to forgive
or let go or start anew.
Bless all who grieve,
missing a mother or a child,
or a relationship that wasn’t what it
should have been.
And bless all those for whom mothering is
complicated, heartbreaking, or incomplete.
May there be tenderness today.
Enough to honor what’s beautiful.
Enough to name what still hurts.
Enough to hold the complexity
without needing to tidy it up.
And may love–real, honest, ordinary love–
be what finds you.
Today and every day after.
Last Wednesday, over 60 Riversiders gathered over a Holy Smokes BBQ meal to learn more about AI (artificial intelligence) and its growing role in our world and daily lives. Trace Jackson led us in a discussion and demonstration of AI tools and also gave us an overview of risks and rewards to AI. It was an evening of insight, and we look forward to future discussions.
Trace Jackson is a Jacksonville-based attorney specializing in intellectual property and technology law, with particular expertise in artificial intelligence and generative AI. He regularly teaches and speaks on the risks, ethics, and practical applications of AI for organizations and professionals.

We loved having our RPDS families join us for worship! It was a true full-circle moment: Mr. Ketchum helped lead the service, our bulletin featured a special Pre-K 3 prayer, and our communion elements were served by RPC Elders who are also RPDS parents, teachers, and trustees. We’re so proud to be on the corner of Park and Post with you!

🌍 We celebrated the earth and all the things that creep on Sunday! 🐜 🐞 🐛
Kathy Stark led our faith sharing with children’s moment and shared about ways that we can care for insects and butterflies while also keeping our yards free of pesky mosquitoes.
The Earth was celebrated through music, word, and action!
after the service, everyone was invited to pick up a mosquito “dunk” to help keep their yard mosquito free while keeping all of our creepy crawly friends safe!
If you want to hear about Pastor Brian‘s favorite insect, make sure to listen to his sermon. Available wherever you listen to podcasts or by calling 904-267-1537.

At youth group this past Sunday, the youth, along with Pastor Lauren and Youth Ministry Intern Camille, reflected on time and seasons as part of their study of Ecclesiastes 3. The youth created their own version of Ecclesiastes 3 based on their lives today. Youth Group ended with some of the high school seniors marking this season of their lives by leaving their mark on the youth space!
Transcript of Ecclesiastes 3 version created by RPC Youth:
“For everything there is a season and a time for every matter under heaven.” - Ecclesiastes 3
A time to sleep and a time to wake
A time to talk and a time to be quiet
A time to play sports and a time for school
A time to inhale and a time to exhale
A time to live and a time to die
A time for noise and a time for silence
A time to laugh and a time to cry
A time to drive and a time to ride
A time to challenge and a time to observe
A time to consume and a time to release
A time to work and a time to trust
A time to be busy and a time to relax
A time to have power and a time to be without power
A time to travel and a time to stay
A time to learn and a time to teach
A time to wait and a time to go

Join us during the 10:30 am worship service as we recognize and celebrate RPC’s graduating high school seniors. There will be a reception to follow in Bittinger Hall. This holy season of Lent invites us to walk the quiet road—turning and returning to God, trusting that even in the shadow of the cross, God is making all things new. ✝️
“Out of the depths I cry to you, O Lord.
Lord, hear my voice!
Let your ears be attentive
to the voice of my supplications!
If you, O Lord, should mark iniquities,
Lord, who could stand?
But there is forgiveness with you,
so that you may be revered.
I wait for the Lord; my soul waits,
and in his word I hope;
my soul waits for the Lord
more than those who watch for the morning,
more than those who watch for the morning.
O Israel, hope in the Lord!
For with the Lord there is steadfast love,
and with him is great power to redeem.
It is he who will redeem Israel
from all its iniquities.”
–Psalm 130

One week ago, we flipped pancakes and gathered in joyful fellowship as we prepared for Lent. 🥞✨
Lent is a season of prayer, reflection, and renewal that begins on Ash Wednesday and leads us toward Easter joy. Our “Shrove Sunday” celebration (rooted in the tradition of Shrove Tuesday) gave us a beautiful, joy-filled way to enter this holy season together.
From pancakes and bacon to live music and the mini float parade through Kissling Hall it was a gift to gather in fellowship and prepare our hearts.
Lent has begun. May we walk these 40 days with intention, grace, and hope. 💜

This Sunday, February 1, join us for Worship and Wonder at 8:30 am!
This intergenerational service follows a similar order of worship to traditional Sunday mornings, with increased opportunities for experiential learning, including relevant and engaging faith stations. The welcoming atmosphere supports meaningful connections between worshippers of all ages, especially in the singing of joyful hymns and the sharing of the bread and cup at the communion table where all levels of energy are welcome.*
Faith stations are one component of the service and seek to foster a sense of wonder about matters of faith. Activities are intentionally designed for a wide variety of learning styles and ages, and can be a solo or shared endeavor. (You don’t have to do all of them.) Go at your own pace! Spend as little or as long a time as you’d like at each one.
🍩 Join us for sweet treats, coffee, and juice after the service (and prior to 9:30 am Sunday School) in Bittinger Hall.
Connections deepened | Curiosity encouraged | Communion shared
(*) Nursery is also available
Today we gave thanks for Jean Spyksma‘s ministry among us over the past year. Pastor Brian, Christian Nyman, and Dave Tuttle shared words of thanks from the staff, choir, and handball choir. Dave presented Jean with a plaque using reclaimed wood and pipes from our old organ.
Thank you, Jean!
Photos 4-7 are Jean in action over the last year!

Dear Riversiders,
I am excited to share that we have hired our next Director of Music Ministries and Organist, Jared Stellmacher! Jared is excited to begin his ministry among us, and we are eager to welcome him and his partner, who is also named Jared, to our community! We are aiming for an early February start date as the details of his move to Jacksonville take shape.
Jared auditioned for the position in December, and we received excellent feedback from everyone in attendance on both his conducting and his organ performance abilities. Our church program staff, as well as the entirety of our music director search committee, thoroughly enjoyed our time with him. It’s clear that Jared is not only an excellent musician and conductor, but also a warm, hospitable person who is dedicated to the ministry of the church and his faith in Jesus Christ. The search committee voted unanimously to extend an offer for the position to him, and he gladly accepted our invitation.
Our music search committee was committed to finding a new music director who could do at least three things well: 1. play our organ at a high level befitting of such a quality instrument, 2. bring out the best in our choir and build up our number of voices, and 3. engage the whole Riverside community—church, school, and neighborhood—with warmth, commitment, and collaboration. Jared opens an exciting new chapter in Riverside’s music ministry, and we are convinced that his musical abilities and experience, coupled with his devotion to the Gospel and the ministry of Christ’s Church, will bear much fruit among us, to God’s glory.
Jared has offered you all the following words of introduction, which gives you a great sense of his love of music ministry that all of us who have gotten to know him have already seen firsthand:

The Family Candlelight Christmas Eve service engaged our senses in a few extra ways; there was fabric to feel, frankincense to smell, an example “census” to be conducted, and streamers to wave. What a wonderful way to celebrate the birth of Christ!

Men of Riverside,
You are invited to a Men's Retreat at Marywood Retreat Center in Fruit Cove on January 2–3, 2026. Join us from Friday afternoon through Saturday afternoon. If an overnight isn't for you, you're welcome to commute for both days, or just come for one day. Matt Hartley will lead the retreat on the topic of Interfaith wisdom.
Read this note from Matt:
As we turn the page into a new year, I'd like to invite the men of Riverside for a weekend of fellowship and insight. I've had the pleasure of meeting some of you through guest teaching in Sunday School, and hope to meet more of you on January 2 and 3. For our topic of learning and discussion, I have chosen Interfaith wisdom. This is an area of expertise but also passion for me; I think Christ leads us into fruitful conversation with the wisdom of other religions. I'll share some of what I know about common ground with Islam and Buddhism among other traditions, and will invite your own insights and questions. I look forward to being in fellowship with y'all.
To register, please visit www.bit.ly/rpcmensretreat or call the Church Office (904) 355-4585.

This past Wednesday, the Rev. Dr. Anna Carter Florence led a group of Riversiders in a discussion about her new book “Rehearsing Scripture: Discovering God‘s Word in Community.” She helped us consider how scripture becomes more than words on a page when we “rehearse“ it in community – listening, questioning, and imagining together how God‘s word speaks to our lives today. We were so grateful to hear Dr. Carter Florence‘s thoughts and to also read scripture with her and then discuss it as a group. What a profound evening!
Dr. Carter Florence, along with Dr. Jake Myers, led a preachers studio workshop at RPC for pastors in our Presbytery on Thursday and Friday.

As part of Stewardship Sunday, we “served faithfully” with Hunger Fight.
Over 100 volunteers packed 14,784 meals over two shifts; with quite a few of you working overtime on that second shift! Hunger Fight will distribute these meals to Title 1 schools in Duval County and 520 new books to local preschoolers. The meals will be sent home with students to ensure they have consistent meals and good source of nutrition over the weekends.
Thank you to everyone who helped us live out our stewardship theme of Living Generously, Serving Faithfully.

Living Generously, Serving Faithfully
This year, let’s think about stewardship holistically. We invite you to prayerfully consider a wholehearted investment in the life of our church, one that includes a financial contribution, but also a commitment to participate in the life of our congregation and share your gifts and talents with others.
Please make your pledge on or by October 12, either online or with a paper pledge card (available in the office and the pews).
STEWARDSHIP SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12
Please bring your pledge card to worship this coming Sunday, October 12. During the invitation to the offering, you will be invited to bring your pledge card forward to a basket on the table.
I ALREADY PLEDGED
If you have already turned in your pledge or pledged online, you can place a special "I already pledged" card in the basket, which will be available in the pews.
HUNGER FIGHT FOOD-PACKING, SUNDAY, OCTOBER 12
As an act of service, we will be packing 15,000 meals in two hours on Sunday in Bittinger Hall! Volunteer for one hour at 8:30 or 9:30 am. Sign up: www.bit.ly/oct12hungerfight

Happy 5th Anniversary to Pastor Brian!
This past Sunday, Mary Coxe and Leigh Rosenbloom, co-chairs of the Pastor Nominating Committee who called Brian to Riverside, recognized Brian’s five years of ministry at Riverside and invited everyone to enjoy cake and lemonade after the service.
At RPDS chapel this morning, Mr. Ketchum honored this milestone with a special cross. During Pastor Brian’s chapel message he shared how important it is for us to not just pray prayers of “help” but also, “thanks.”
We are so thankful for Pastor Brian’s leadership and call to ministry among us at Riverside.
